Want to know how long a rope lasts?

Now, we all know that we are supposed to read instructions but be honest—when was the last time you took a peek inside the hangtag?

Well in there among the regular do’s and don'ts you will find the heading "Lifespan" containing the following info that may help you make an informed choice on estimating the life span of your future purchase…..

Intensive Daily Use (i.e. sport climbing, Mountain Guides etc) Less than 1 yr.
Regular Week End Use (i.e. year round) 1-2 years.
Regular Week End Use (i.e. seasonal) 2-3 years.
Occasional (i.e. once a month) 3-5 years.
Sporadic 5-7 years.
Unused 10 years.

But wait! We hear you cry—that’s all very well but how do we know how old the rope is? How long has it been on the warehouse shelf?

And the answer is very simple—just take a look on the front of the hangtag and you will see a small white sticker and just above the barcode is printed the date of manufacture.

Ah, you say—but that’s not much help to me if I have already brought my rope and not (as recommended) kept my instructions for later reference. How can this article help me?

Well, this is where our ropes up the ante a little bit because inside our instruction booklet you will find a paragraph entitled "Identifying the age of the rope by the colour of the control thread" which reads thusly:

There is a colour coded year identicator tape inside the rope along it’s entire length which designates the calendar year of the production of the rope:

2005 Blue        2006 Yellow        2007 Black       2008 red/yellow        2009 blue/yellow

So there you have it, all you ever need to know about rope life.
