Vent That Tent!!

We're no stove experts but we did once have the rather embarrassing experience of almost dying in a single skin tent at 17,000 feet on account of being too knackered to check the vents were open. Make sure you don't become a headline by accident and take heed of one climbers experience with heat exchange stove pans.......Forewarned is forearmed.

Climbers are closet fishermen. Shocker!

It's a complete mystery to the younger members of the Mountain Works Team but it seems there must be some sort of trouser leg rolling, secret handshake fraternity thing going on when climbers of a certain age meet. Sure there are the general greetings,  frivolities & misty eyed memories of routes past but then right after the injury comparisons come there's often a quiet whisper followed by hushed exchanges of river names, weights and the occassional wrist flick. On careful eavesdropping it appears that Fly Fishing is the sport of choice but when food is required then the rules are changed and anything goes. We couldn't possibly name any names but we do have a link....

Frozen Stiffy! Viagra Boost For Mountaineers.

It's true.....

Clever people with beards have been busy experimenting with Viagra and produced an official medical study. Exhausting tests showed that the little blue pills cancel out the enzymes which makes the arteries and lungs constrict at altitude in the same way it is able to maintain blood flow to the male genitalia during....ahem....fornication. Apparently, more clinical trials are still neede as the obvious issues about 5 points of contact still need to be addressed. And what to of lady mountaineers who have rather different requirements on the stiffness front?

The mind boggles but at the end of the day it is important to remember that perhaps manufactured drugs are not necessarily the answer to the joys of altitude. Nature is a magnificent provider and more research is needed to prove that it may be for good reason that certain plants grow naturally in certain mountainous regions - man!

Woops! Slight translation error in the CT Click Up Instructions. Thanks to Real Adventure's Dan Robinson and UKC forum users too. We contacted the lovely folks at Climbing Technology and this was their reply:

Climbing Technology explained that the wording:

"....was to suggest the use on a well equipped route with a good quality bolt , where the best could be the bolt meets the UIAA (UIAA 123 rock
anchors) or CE certification. It's not intended to preclude the use of the CLICKUP were there isn't a UIAA bolt.

Other thing was to advise the user to check well before start climb the quality bolt of the route ..."

Climbing Technology then went on to confirm they will be re-wording the text in the Click Up instructions , with immediate effect,to:

"... if the bolts you are climbing are old and unknown then consider using traditional belay device to reduce the impact on your top anchor...."

There will inevitably be some of the current instructions in circulation for a little while yet but in the menatime you may rest assured that the Click Up is suitable to use on any, well maintained, bolted route.

Mountain Works Responds To UKC Forum Thread on Nuptse Crampons

We don't generally respond to forums as it is very difficult for us as a supplier to appear objective, however, this "Warning" about Climbing Technology crampons being "scarily inadequate" demanded a reply. Many thanks to the other forum users for taking the time to put their more valid points across. Read the full open letter here

Neil Mawson in double 8c Tufa-thon!

Having spent a fantastic few months in Spain Neil was super psyched to have completed two 8c routes in as many weeks.

First up was Espacio Tiempo in Sella, Costa Blanca where a 5 day battle with seepage was overcome with the cunning tactic of taping a rag over a crucial tufa just below the top to keep the hold dry!

Once completed Neil had his eye on a final project before returning home and topped out on the classic Tufa line Humildes Pa Casa at Oliana, Catalunya. A 50m excursion involving the first 25m at 7c+ to a good  rest then an amazing single tufa up a barrelling wall to the top.

Dude!

It's Here!

The Climbing Technology gear has arrived! Luckily the lorry made it through the biblical floods that we have been having here in Cumbria et voila - just click onto any page and choose from karabiners, via ferratta kits, belays, ascenders, harnesses, descenders, pulleys etc.

Annoyingly a small web glitch has meant that the climbing gear isn't quite up and live on the site but rest assured this will be rectified next week so that you can surf among the ice axes, crampons, snow anchors and ice screws.

If you are in Kendal for the KMFF this weekend then why not drop by the ISM & Kendal Wall stand and check out the exciting new Click Up first hand - it will be available to buy in three weeks time.

Or, if you are in Snowdonia then head for Joe Browns where you can fondle a wide range of Climbing Technology gear in person as they are the very first UK retailer to stock the range.
